A defence department spokeswoman said the “inert” one pound, 150 millimetre-long projectile was collected by a military explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) team for subsequent disposal. The spokeswoman said the projectile was from 1918 and was likely to have been made for use by a tank or as part of navy weaponry.
Victoria Police were notified after the projectile was found and handed the incident over to the defence department.
The defence department spokeswoman advised members of the public that if they found a suspicious item that might be unexploded ordnance, they should not touch or disturb it.
Local police should be contacted who would arrange for military experts to attend and dispose of the device, the spokeswoman said.
Further information on unexploded ordnance and how suspicious items should be dealt with can be found at the defence department’s unexploded ordnance website at http://www.defence.gov.au/uxo/
