Warrnambool College year 10 student Gabby Good, 16, won the Beverly Melican Memorial Poetry Award, while Emmanuel College year 12 student Annabel Ziegeler, 16, was presented with the open section Ellis Bickley Memorial Youth Award.
Judge Ann O’Brien said Annabel’s eight-minute speech on “charity begins at home” showed an impressive level of thought.
‘”I thought the thesis of her argument was exceptional,” she said.
“(Emmanuel College) should be very proud of her.”
City of Warrnambool Eisteddfod president Joy Irvine said five contestants competed for the speech award’s $50 first-prize and trophy, with Summer Medley finishing second and Declan Primmer in third place.
“They did very well,” she said. “Their speeches were excellent. The adjudicator spoke very highly of the standard.”
She said Gabby had won her $100 prize and trophy after performing three different poems. “They were quite different in their origins. Again, the adjudicator commented on the choice of poems.”
