It is believed the Heywood spectator aged in his 40s was knocked unconscious in an altercation with another man and went into cardiac arrest about 5.25pm.
Hamilton Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the alleged assault but the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death are yet to be confirmed.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said there were attempts to resuscitate the man until the MICA paramedics arrived at the Edgars Road facility at 5.36pm with three other ambulance units.
Paramedics continued to perform CPR but the man died at the scene.
The air ambulance could not land at the football ground due to poor weather conditions.
