Musgrove won a benchmark 0-64 handicap over 2000m with a gelding called About The Journey on the final day of last year’s carnival. Yesterday, on the corresponding day, their journey took another twist with the six-year-old winning the champion novice hurdle (3200m).
The veteran trainer said a jumps career had also been in the pipeline for About The Journey but he struggled to run out races late last season.
Despite winning a maiden hurdle, Musgrove opted to keep him running on the flat before identifying yesterday’s race for him.
“It looked like a lovely race for those who started hurdling last year,” Musgrove said.
Jockey Arron Lynch had About The Journey ($5.50) second last with four hurdles to jump. But by the time they cleared the last, they had taken the lead and ran away to a five-length win from Set You Free ($8).
