The three-year-old gelding ($5) posted back-to-back wins at the May Racing Carnival when he scored a last-to-first win in a benchmark 70 handicap over 1000 metres.
Colin Chandler’s The Four Lads ($4) was second and Patrick Ryan’s Gloop ($15) third, giving Warrnambool trainers a trifecta in the race.
Williams gave jockey Damien Thornton a “12 out of 10” for taking Reigning Meteor to the back of the field before pulling him four wide at the top of the straight. “(The horse) has been fine at the trials and we hadn’t really let him ride off the bridle so we knew he had a bit up his sleeve,” he said.
“Gelding has helped him and he’s in for a good prep.”
Williams said he would prepare Reigning Meteor for a three-year-old handicap in Melbourne for his next start.
But the Wangoom — a race Uxorious won in 2011 — looms large down the track.
