Ambulance Victoria spokesperson John Mullen said the boy drank a mouthful of petrol from a soft-drink can on a property near Stawell on Thursday afternoon.
He said the boy was treated at the scene by paramedics and then taken to the Ararat Hospital.
Mr Mullen said the boy was airlifted to Melbourne shortly after.
Mr Mullen said it was not known why the can was filled with petrol.
