The Saints will sweat on the result of scans on star forward Sam Dobson, who limped from Victoria Park midway through the final term with a knee injury.
Dobson, who kicked five goals alongside former Maskell Medal winner Ben Goodall — who kicked six — joined two other casualties in the medical room after the 19.9 (123) to 10.9 (69) victory.
Veteran Chris McLaren took no part in the game after half-time because of hamstring tightness and versatile running player Jayden Whitehead tore a hamstring in the third term.
Coach Adam Dowie said he wouldn’t rule Dobson out of Saturday’s clash against Port Fairy but conceded he was in doubt.
He said McLaren and Whitehead’s injuries had affected the Saints in the second half, ending their policy of rotating a small for a tall off the bench and into the forward line that had helped create several scoring opportunities in the first half.
“We are happy with the result but we probably weren’t happy with the way we played,” he said.
“We were a bit flat after the game.”
Dowie said Goodall’s first game of the season was impressive, while defender Dallas Mooney controlled his side’s defence, taking many intercepting marks.
He said the Saints’ ball-use was probably better than the Eagles’. Eagles co-coach Graeme Twaddle said his side had achieved many of its targets for the day, yet still suffered a heavy defeat.
“We were disappointed with the outcome,” he said.
“The biggest factor we are disappointed with is that our work around the stoppages was really good.
“We won a lot of the contested footy and according to our stats we did them in those areas and we had 10-12 more inside 50s. If you look at our board you wouldn’t have said we would have got beaten.
“They were very good getting numbers back behind the ball.”
Twaddle said the Eagles had chances in the first term to put pressure on the Saints and failed, kicking 1.4 to 5.1.
“They were really efficient going forward. Their spread was fantastic once they got possession.”
Twaddle said the Eagles were unlikely to regain midfielder Jye Bidmade for next week’s clash against South Warrnambool, having been ruled out of the game after suffering an adductor injury at training on Thursday night.
The Eagles expect to regain ruckman Jordan Dillon, whose unavailability had left them short of a marking target up forward.
