Warrnambool police Acting Sergeant James Van Engelen said the 19-year-old Warrnambool man was heading west on the Penshurst Road about two kilometres from Koroit when he lost control and hit the pole.
"He's probably lucky to be alive. He's probably half a metre off being in a whole lot worse situation," he said.
"The pole impact on the rear driver's side door. The driver suffered a gash to his neck and a few other injuries. He was taken by ambulance to Warrnambool to be assessed and treated," he said.
An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the service got a call at 5.25am. He said the driver was in a stable condition after suffering neck and back injuries.
Acting Sergeant Van Engelen said the wet road may have contributed to the driver losing control of the red Holden Commodore sedan.
"We just caution all motorists to take care in the wet and drive to the conditions," he said.
