WARRNAMBOOL is being asked to give a big show of support for up to 180 cyclists and team members who will arrive in the city on Wednesday, April 29, for the Tour de Cure’s Signature Tour that raises funds to fight cancer.

Tour organisers are hoping people will support the cyclists when they arrive in Warrnambool after 6pm on April 29 following their day’s ride from Mount Gambier, and also when they leave the next morning from the Civic Green in Liebig Street.
The overnight stop by the riders from throughout Australia will also be a great opportunity to showcase Warrnambool and its support for the fight against cancer with Mark Beretta, a presenter for the Sunrise morning television program, to do live crosses from the Civic Green on the morning of April 30 before the cyclists depart.
Beretta is a keen cyclist and has been committed to Tour de Cure’s mission to cure cancer since 2007.
A member of the Tour de Cure board, he is taking part in this year’s tour with his brother Paul Beretta of Geelong.
The tour’s overnight stop in Warrnambool will include a fund-raising community dinner at the Mid-City Motel in Raglan Parade to which the public is invited.
The 6.15pm-8pm dinner will be addressed by German former professional rider Jens Voigt, who has won the Criterium International five times as well as two Tour de France stages.
Voigt is riding in the Tour de Cure that is stopping in Warrnambool as part of its nine-day, 1335-kilometre ride from Adelaide to Melbourne.
He will speak at the dinner about his cycling career and provide insights about what he, his teammates, family and friends do to prevent cancer in their lives.
At the dinner, a $10,000 donation will be presented to Cancer Council Victoria to go towards financial and support services for cancer patients in the Warrnambool and district community.
Cancer Council Victoria said the money would help relieve local cancer patients and their families of some everyday financial pressures as the patients went through treatment.
A community breakfast and entertainment will also be provided at Warrnambool’s Civic Green on the morning of April 30 to involve the local community in cyclists’ departure in groups between 7.45am-9am.
Organisers said they hoped families would ride their bikes to the square to take part.
