Yachting Western Victoria outgoing president Matt Harper said about 56 local and metropoliton competitors took to Lake Bullen Merri for the four-day regatta that wound up yesterday.
“We had boats from Warrnambool, Portland, Stawell, Derrinallum, Altona, McCrae, on the other side of the bay, and boats from around Geelong as well,” he said.
“Numbers were about on par with last year, maybe a bit down, and I think the forecast had something to do with that.”
Conditions on the lake were mostly light across the weekend and two scheduled races were called off due to a lack of wind.
Races were held over the course of the event in six divisions — fast and slow catamarans, fast and slow monohulls, juniors and a trailer division.
The regatta finished yesterday with the Jack Lane Memorial sternchaser race.
White Pointer, skippered by Scott McDonald, made the journey from Altona worthwhile when they claimed the handicap event.
Jack Lane’s sons, Ian and Gary Lane, from Warrnambool, were on hand to present the trophy.
Mr Harper said the club covered a wide section of the south-west.
“The club goes as far as Rivoli Bay in South Australia, then across to Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Colac, Derrinallum, Stawell and Horsham,” he said.
The regatta’s traditional home is Lake Bolac, but it was moved to Camperdown this year due to low water levels.
Mr Harper said the club would now wait to see where the event would be held next year.
