Eight students set a new record or equalled the previous mark during the annual carnival at the Caramut Road track on Tuesday.

Emmanuel College’s Eloise Swarbrick and Brauer College’s Jack Ansell wrote themselves into the record books in two events.

Eloise cleared 1.38m in the 13-year girls’ high jump, 2cm better than the previous mark of 1.38m.

She also went 2cm better in the long jump, leaping 4.42m to break the old record of 4.40m.

Jack set new records in the 17-year boys’ long jump and triple jump.

His leap in the long jump, 6.09m, made him the first in his age group in Warrnambool to clear 6m. The previous record was 5.93m.

But his triple jump effort was the more impressive. He jumped 12.55m, breaking a mark which had stood since 1986, 11.96m.

Others to set new records included Emma Ragg (Emmanuel), who clocked 5.25.99 for the 13-year girls’ 1500m. Liam Herbert (Emmanuel) equalled 14-year  boys’ high jump record by clearing 1.60m.

Haydn Stutchbury (Brauer) also set a high jump record, in the 15-year boys. He cleared 1.72m to beat the previous mark by 2cm. 

Vanessa McLaren (Brauer) leaped 8.89m in the 13-year  girls’ triple jump to smash the old record by an astounding 49cm. 

Zhane Rodgers (Brauer) threw 24.83m in the 16-year girls’ discus. Her effort was 62cm better than the existing mark.

Olivia Williams (King’s) set a new record in the 13-year girls’ shot put, throwing 8.63m, an improvement of 26cm.

Brauer College sports co-ordinator Jason Kermeen said the number of records was on a par with previous years.

“Athletics to me seems reasonably strong, we’ve got some really good athletes running around, from all the schools,” he said.

Brauer College took the overall honours, scoring 1891.5 points. Warrnambool College was second (1744), Emmanuel College third (1366.5) and King’s College fourth (348).

Brauer also won three of the six age sections — senior boys, senior girls and intermediate boys.

Age group champions: 13 boys, Nino Abion (Brauer); 13 girls, Eloise Swarbrick (Emmanuel); 14 boys, Jay Rantall (Warrnambool); 14 girls, Molly McKinnon (Emmanuel) and Maddison Giblin (Brauer); 15 boys, Bailey Brooks (Brauer); 15 girls, Naticia Varley (Warrnambool); 16 boys,  Callum Dunn (Brauer); 16 girls, Zhane Rodgers (Brauer); 17 boys, Lachlan Mahony (Brauer); 17 girls, Laura Lafferty (Emmanuel); 18 boys, Zachary Sandow (Brauer); 18 girls, Sarah Hall (Warrnambool).
