On Saturday it took a huge step torward that ambition with a comfortable B grade grand final win over Killarney at Purnim.
Batting first, Woolsthorpe made 7/202 with an 80-run second wicket partnership between Wayne Hansford (51) and Shannon Richardson (43) laying the foundation for the big total. The bowlers then finished the job, bowling out Killarney for 117. Darby Capuano, Peter Campbell and Bradley Bell each took two wickets.
The win marked back-to-back flags for Woolsthorpe, which is keen to follow up the success off the field.
Club president Denis Findlay said they had already started looking for a coach and extra players of A grade quality to allow it to make the step up.
“We are desperate to get a coach who we hope can attract some A grade players to the club,” Findlay said.
“Some of our older blokes are retiring but we have young blokes like Shannon Richardson, Brent Fedley, Bradley Bell and Darby Capuano who can form the backbone of an A grade team.
“Being a bit further out of town than some of the other clubs it makes it a bit harder to recruit but we think we have enough to offer to make coming to Woolsthorpe an attractive option.”
Findlay said the club was working hard on improving its facilities at Woolsthorpe Recreation Reserve.
The clubrooms have been upgraded and during the off season a new pitch will be laid.
“We are also looking at building a new barbecue area and replacing the old fence with a picket fence ...”
