Warrnambool and District Football Umpires’ Association is looking to bolster its stocks of officials for the upcoming season with an open day on Sunday.
President Jason Hughes said the association’s numbers were on par with this time last year but it wanted to increase members.
He said the association needed more central, boundary and goal umpires.
“It’s the same across the state, not just in Warrnambool,” he said.
Hughes said the open day was being held so prospective members could meet other umpires and tour the officials. An open training session is also being held on Sunday morning.
“Apart from people who want to join the umpires, we are also looking to have people who might play in the under 14s, under 16s, under 17s, under 18s who play in the morning, they might want to umpire in the afternoon at their ground,” he said.
“It might be kids who play on Sundays who want to umpire on a Saturday afternoon.”
He said the association, while in a good position heading into the season, had plenty of scope to take on more boundary umpires.
“Kids who might want to do the boundary can earn up to $1000 a season,” he said.
“We have got some former ones back but we look forward to having more, male, female, kids.”
Hughes said his members had been training hard for the past six weeks and were looking forward to the season starting next month.
Sunday’s open day begins at 10.30am at the association’s headquarters at Reid Oval and will run to about noon, with a light lunch following. More information is available from the association’s website www.wdfua.com.au
