Mr Goodacre, 80, was yesterday announced as Corangamite Shire’s 2015 Citizen of the Year for his extensive contribution to Lismore that he said “just happened”.
“It’s not really work,” he told the crowd of about 200 people at Corangamite’s Australia Day ceremony at Simpson of his volunteer efforts. “Most of it is for pleasure.”
His contribution extends from mowing the grass at community facilities such as the bowling green and cemetery to staffing Lismore’s Driver Reviver station.
Mr Goodacre said his volunteer work helped him enjoy life and assisting others was a natural thing to do in small communities.
Corangamite mayor Chris O’Connor acknowledged a huge community contribution by shire residents at the ceremony.
He said the shire had received a record 45 entries for its four Australia Day award categories.
As well as announcing the four principal winners, the shire also handed out 41 achievement awards.
Caitlin Smart, 18, was announced as the Young Female Citizen of the Year.
As a member of Mercy Regional College’s Social Justice Team, Ms Smart organised events to support women’s education and empowerment and also volunteered at St Vincent de Paul and Terang hospital.
The Young Male Citizen of the Year award went to Grant Coverdale, 22, a passionate environmentalist who formed the Bostocks Creek and District Landcare Group last year and has led extensive revegetation work.
Mr Coverdale recently completed a degree in environmental science and is a project officer for the Heytesbury Landcare Group and the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf reserves at Camperdown.
He is involved in the development of an education centre at the reserves that will provide information about the south-west volcanic plains and revegetation projects.
