Warrnambool Gold dominated the division one grand final at Reid Oval while Warrnambool clinched the division two decider at Jetty Flat
With Warrnambool Blue also featuring in the top-grade showcase, the results represented a perfect week for the hosts.
“It shows there’s a lot of depth in our juniors, which is the best thing,” division two coach Jake Burgess said.
Top-order batsmen Shannon Beks, Hugh McCluggage and Liam Brown were the stars of the show in Gold’s 122-run win.
Shannon (65) and Hugh (85) added 138 for the second wicket while Liam (29 not out) finished with a flurry to lift the side to 3-195.
Tyler Fowler (1-26) and Blake Evans (1-31) were the only wicket takers, with Tyler breaking a bail in dismissing Charlie Locke (bowled).
Blue never got going with the bat, slumping to 5-35 and finishing all out for 70. Sam Younghusband top scored with 17.
Glenn Moore, who had taken just two wickets for the tournament before yesterday, did the bulk of the damage, snaring 4-17.
Gold coach Andrew Thomson put the success down to patient batting and each player knowing their role in the team.
“I thought McCluggage and Beks were outstanding. When they were bowled a bad ball, they hit a bad ball,” he said.
“I thought 150 would’ve been par, 195 was as good as 230 or 240. It was going to put them under enormous pressure and we bowl really deep.
“We batted deep and bowled deep. We didn’t have the stars but I thought we executed our game plans really well.
“The thing about it was, after four days everyone knew exactly what their role was...it was really finely-tuned so each player knew their role.
“Glenn Moore at third-change today, to come on and get three or four wickets, I thought he was outstanding.”
Blue coach Nathan Murphy said he was proud of his players. Blue, like Gold, was undefeated entering the grand final but failed to fire with the bat.
“It was a good week. One of the things that was enjoyable was seeing everyone have a good go at batting and bowling,” he said.
“We still made the final but unfortunately we couldn’t put it together on the day.
“All the kids were given an opportunity to succeed at some stage and they gelled really well...it was a really good group to coach.”
Murphy praised Shannon and Hugh for keeping out the Blue bowlers. In reply, early wickets were damaging. “We were always on the back foot,” he said.
Across town, a superb batting display was the difference as Warrnambool defeated a youthful Grassmere outfit by 145 runs.
Warrnambool posted 9-195 batting first, thanks to 56 from captain Lachlan O’Neill. Jarrod Petherick added 39 while Matt McLeod made 33.
Grassmere was all out for 50 in reply. Ryan Prout took an astonishing 6-8 to claim man-of-the-match honours.
“I was really proud about the way they went about it during the week,” Burgess said.
“Especially Lachlan O’Neill, as captain he made consistent runs all week, he was one of the standouts as well as Davis Lindsey.
“But one of the most important parts was the way they gelled as a team. They really got around each other.”
Burgess said Davis, who made a century on Wednesday, was Warrnambool’s player of the week “but they’re all good lads, they were really good to coach”.
Warrnambool Gold’s Liam Brown was the division one player of the tournament while Colac’s Tyler Flanagan earned the division two honour.
