Cricket bats for backyard Boxing Day tests, basketball sets for budding superstars and fishing bits and bobs are selling well in the final weeks before Christmas.
Robinsons Sportscene owner Russell Robinson said children and teenagers wanted to test out their on-field skills as Test matches on television returned for another summer.
The Hamilton store owner said many young cricket players were keen to follow in the footsteps of national cricket captain Michael Clarke — just as they wanted to take on the mantle of Allan Border and Steve Waugh a generation ago.
“Michael Clarke has got a huge following — he’s been great for Australian cricket,” Mr Robinson said.
“Once every so often you get a big star, usually it’s the captain, and the kids really want to get out there and play cricket.”
Fishing equipment of varying sizes were also selling well at the Hamilton store with shoppers keen to pick up smaller items as stocking fillers.
Sportspower Warrnambool assistant manager Andrew Cheeseman said cricket bats and basketball systems were popular as Christmas shoppers make their final purchases.
“Basketball systems always sell well, from those at the cheaper end of the scale to the state-of-the-art ones,” Mr Cheeseman said.
“Cricket coming back on the telly coincides with the lead-up to Christmas each year, so it’s no surprise that it’s a popular option too.
“David Warner has been an absolute superstar and his performance has got a lot of kids interested in cricket.”
