Sumo wrestling, kimono dress-ups, noodles and chopsticks all featured at the school’s Japanese Festival.
Pupils from all year levels joined in the fun with a range of cultural activities.
Japanese teacher Anne Robertson organised the festival and said the pupils have been learning the language for the past two terms.
“From 2015 language is one of the core subjects in Victoria from prep onwards,” she said.
“Japanese is tried and tested in Warrnambool and we have a sister school in Miura. Emmanuel and Brauer College also teach Japanese so this is the beginning of their learning.”
Pupils enjoyed yaki soba noodles, yaki tori (chicken skewers) and onigiri (rice balls) for lunch.
“Onigiri is what students have for lunch in Japan,” Ms Robertson said.
“The students have cooked the food in their classrooms.”
Grade 6 pupils assisted with other activities.
Sumo wrestling with paper sumo figures and kendama (a ball catching game) were played.
“We are trying to teach the pupils some new Japanese skills,” Ms Robertson said.
Pupils lined up to test their form with a pair of chopsticks, trying to pick up small lollies from a plate while others dressed up in kimonos.
