Detective Senior Constable Chris Potter, of the Colac police crime investigation unit, said no charges had been laid and investigations were continuing into an incident on Sunday night.
A Colac man, 56, was transported to The Alfred hospital after allegedly being assaulted.
The man was alleged to have been pushed to the ground about 8pm at a friend's Wilson Street home and assaulted.
He suffered head injuries, was taken to the Colac hospital and after assessment was transferred to Melbourne with extensive facial injuries including likely fractures.
Portland police are also making inquiries at the city's Short Street milkbar after it was broken into again overnight and cigarettes stolen.
The milkbar was the subject of a similar break-in last week.
On Monday last week cigarettes valued at hundreds of dollars were stolen.An offender approached the business about 4am and forced entry to the premises through the front door.
