The victims said a crowd estimated at almost 50 people swamped the family’s residence recently after the sale had been advertised in The Standard.
Some of the visitors allegedly took advantage of the situation and helped themselves to items, which they concealed before leaving.
“We were bombarded,” said a family spokeswoman, who did not wish to be identified.
“They rushed in, grabbed valuable items and walked out again. It left us flabbergasted and very disappointed.
“We later heard from a number of other people that it’s like a gang doing the rounds of garage sales.
“They have someone to distract the sellers while others help themselves.”
Police said they were not aware of the incident but advised anyone to report suspicious behaviour.
