Member for Polwarth Terry Mulder, representing the state minister for regional and rural development Peter Ryan, said the concept designs would be provided to Moyne Shire Council and address community and infrastructure needs, traffic implications and the upgrade costs.
The designs will seek to create safe pedestrian links, connect buildings and public infrastructure, plant new foliage, add treatments of the road median strips and install new street furniture, Mr Mulder said.
“The concept design will also incorporate planning for future upgrades to the Mortlake Library and Visitor Information Centre by addressing streetscape and adjoining property linkages to both sites,” Mr Mulder said.
“This project is the second stage of Mortlake’s streetscape program,” he said.
“The Mortlake Streetscape Committee which oversaw stage one improvements identified a need to continue the urban renewal works into Dunlop Street, the main thoroughfare through Mortlake on the Hamilton Highway.
“A qualified landscape architect will be appointed and will be responsible for community consultation, site analysis, and the development of a final concept plan including costings.”
Stakeholders involved in the project include Moyne Shire councillors and officers, Mortlake Community Development Committee, VicRoads, Mortlake Street-scape Committee and the town’s traders and schools. Moyne Shire will contribute $7500 to the cost of creating the design concepts.
Mortlake Community Development Committee president Kelvin Goodall welcomed the funding. He hoped the issues to be addressed would include improving traffic management at the intersection of Webster and Dunlop streets, where some motorists were confused as to who should give way.
