School principal Peter Auchettl said the school flew the Australian flag 24 hours a day, including under floodlights at night, so its flags quickly became frayed in Warrnambool’s windy weather.
It was happy to receive another flag from Mr Tehan yesterday as part of the federal government’s promotion of Australian National Flag Day on September 3.
The government is encouraging all schools, other government buildings and anyone with a flagpole to fly the Australian flag on Wednesday, September 3, the anniversary of the first time the flag was flown in 1901.
The flag’s design was chosen in 1901 from entries in a competition held following the federation of Australian colonies earlier that year.
The flag was first flown in Melbourne over the dome of the Royal Exhibition Building.
Mr Tehan said Australian National Flag Day encouraged people to remember the significance of the Australian flag and all those who had fought under it and sacrificed their lives for the Australian way of life.
Mr Auchettl said Warrnambool Primary School also displayed about 18 other national flags in its assembly hall to acknowledge the birthplaces of its overseas-born pupils.
