While the mercury never reached lower than 4 degrees, from 12.07am to 8.54am it felt like below zero in Warrnambool, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The Warrnambool Airport recorded 18.2 millimetres of rainfall from Thursday at 9am through to the same time on Friday, with almost 6mm after midnight.
Portland had 20mm of rain and Hamilton had 19.6.
The forecast for the rest of Friday across the south-west predicts scattered showers with hail and thunder, with winds west to northwesterly 30 to 40 km/h turning southwesterly 30 to 45 km/h in the morning then decreasing to 25 to 35 km/h in the evening.
A daytime maximum temperature is forecast between 7 and 10 degrees.
VicRoads has advised motorists to slow down and drive carefully on the road between Casterton and Coleraine where ice could form.
A traffic alert warned motorists that wet and cold weather could reduce visibility and cause roads to be more slippery.
