As part of Education Week celebrations, the pupils enjoyed the story Too Many Elephants in This House, by Australian author Ursula Dubosarsky, which was read in classrooms around the country for National Simultaneous Storytime.
Each year an Australian-written and illustrated picture book is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
The concept aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, the value and fun of books and provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents and others.
Children from South Warrnambool Kindergarten joined them to hear the tale of Eric and the problems he faces with all the elephants living in his house.
Merrivale Primary School teacher Nicole Cousins said National Simultaneous Storytime had been held annually for the last 14 years and aimed to encourage pupils to read more.
She said it was one of many activities the school had planned for Education Week, with pupils also participating in a soccer clinic and a visit to Flagstaff Hill to learn more about the Maremma penguin program.
Today they will take part in national walk safely to school day as well as tree planting at the nearby Maarang Park.
