The HEMS 4 helicopter landed on the Bushfield oval yesterday morning to a round of applause from the youngsters, giving the prep, grade 1 and 2 pupils a chance to get a close look and a better understanding of its role in the community.
But during the visit the crew received a call, packed up quickly and was soon in the air on the way to an emergency at Dunkeld.
Prep and grade 1 teacher Tanya McPherson said the visit had been arranged as part of the term’s unit of work focusing on community services.
She said paramedic Ben Hespe visited the school last week to speak about his career and the varied emergencies he attends.
“We were going to take the children to the air ambulance base, but they offered to land on the oval for us to give the children the experience,” Ms McPherson said.
She said the unit involved exploring all sorts of community services.
“We’ve been to the vet clinic and next week we will visit the Woodford Fire Station,” she said.
“It’s all about giving the children that hands-on experience and witnessing how these services operate.”
