The two Melbourne men were trapped on Mount Sturgeon, north of Dunkeld.
The 36-year-old Balwyn North man and the 26-year-old Northcote man are believed to have veered off the track when climbing the mountain on Saturday afternoon.
They managed to get to a ledge where they used a mobile phone to contact triple zero.
Helicopter crews were called in to assess the area where the men were trapped. It was decided they would be unable to winch the men out because there was not enough room for the chopper.
Police search and rescue specialist rope teams, assisted by State Emergency Service and Country Fire Authority volunteers, climbed down to the men.
Both men were then assessed and were found to be uninjured.
Rescue crews then took about two hours to get the men to the bottom of the mountain and onto safe ground.
