Melbourne Country Week day two

THE WRAP: Two wins from two matches has put Warrnambool and District in control of its Melbourne Country Week destiny.

The Brett Eldridge-captained side defeated Mornington Peninsula (2) by 54 runs at Brighton Beach Oval to remain on top of division two.

Dustin Drew (55), Karl Turner (48) and Josh Stapleton (45) - all batsmen in the top four - led Warrnambool and District to 8-230 after it won the toss and batted.

Matt Brophy (20 not out) and Jason Mungean (19 not out) were also crucial late in the innings.

Jake McKinnon was then the star with the ball, taking 3-27 as Mornington Peninsula (2) was bowled out for 176 in 39.5 overs.

Warrnambool and District batted a second time, smashing 4-99 from 10 overs to claim crucial bonus points.

Warrnambool and District will play winless Yarra Valley at Bill Lawry Oval in Northcote on Wednesday.

South West is also celebrating victory on day two of MCW after defeating Leongatha and District by three wickets in a provincial grade clash at Kew Cricket Ground.

Stand-in skipper Todd Lamont produced heroics with the bat and ball to lead the way in the breakthrough win.

Lamont took 4-16 as Leongatha and District slumped to 6-59 before finishing at 8-180.

He then top scored with 47 and shared in a 78-run stand with Ben Grinter (43) as South West reached the target seven wickets down and finished with 8-216.

Opener Josh Barr (39) was also crucial, as were Clinton Baker (26 not out) and Fraser Lucas (23) who ensured there would be no lower-order collapse.

South West plays Bairnsdale - the side it defeated in the 2012 division two grand final - at Central Reserve in Glen Waverley on Wednesday.

5PM: Warrnambool and District is unbeaten at Melbourne Country Week after defeating Mornington Peninsula (2) in its division two match.

Jake McKinnon and Ben Boyd starred with the ball in the 54-run triumph at Brighton Beach Oval.

Warrnambool and District made 8-230 after winning the toss and batting and dismissed Mornington Peninsula (2) for 176.

Warrnambool and District has gone back into bat for 10 overs in search of quick runs for bonus points.

South West finished its successful run chase at 8-216, having earlier passed Leongatha and District's 8-180 to win the provincial grade match by three wickets.

4.15PM: South West has scored its first win at 2014 Melbourne Country Week today.

Fraser Lucas, fresh off a century for Bookaar at club level last Saturday, and Clinton Baker held their nerve late to secure the three-wicket win against Leongatha and District at Kew Cricket Ground.

South West is 7-183 off 45 overs and has just passed Leongatha and District's 8-180. Lucas and Baker will press on in search of quick runs.

Todd Lamont has top scored with 47 while Ben Grinter made 43. The pair combined for a match-defining partnership after South West slumped to 5-84.

A burst of wickets has Warrnambool and District in control of its Melbourne Country Week division two match against Mornington Peninsula (2) at Brighton Beach Oval.

MPCA is 6-137 off 27 overs in pursuit of WDCA's 8-230. MPCA needs 94 runs off 138 balls for victory with four wickets in hand.

3.30PM: South West and Warrnambool and District face down-to-the-wire finishes at Melbourne Country Week today.

South West is 5-123 after 30 overs in its provincial grade match against Leongatha and District and needs 58 runs off 120 balls with five wickets in hand for victory at Kew Cricket Ground.

Warrnambool and District is defending 8-230 and has Mornington Peninsula (2) at 3-103 off 20 overs in division two. MPCA needs 128 runs off 180 balls with seven wickets in hand.

2.45PM: Josh Barr is leading the way for South West in its provincial grade match against Leongatha and District at Kew Cricket Ground.

Barr has made 38 not out to steer SWC to 3-73 off 15 overs, in pursuit of LDCA's 8-180 from earlier in the day.

Mornington Peninsula (2) is 0-35 off seven overs chasing Warrnambool and District's 8-230 in division two at Brighton Beach Oval.

1.30PM: South West has a tricky run chase on its hands to score the first win of its Melbourne Country Week provincial grade campaign.

Leongatha and District recovered from 6-64 to post 8-180 off its 50 overs at Kew Cricket Ground.

Stand-in captain Todd Lamont was the best of the bowlers, taking a stellar 4-16 from 10 overs, while his Mortlake teammate Clinton Baker took 2-29 off 10 overs.

Warrnambool and District has posted 8-230 in its division two match against Mornington Peninsula (2) at Brighton Beach Oval.

Openers Dustin Drew (55) and Karl Turner (48) top scored and put on 69 for the first wicket. Josh Stapleton made 45 towards the end while Matt Brophy (20*) and Jason Mungean (19*) put on an unbroken 39 for the ninth wicket.

The score is reportedly above-par, with the wicket slower than expected and the outfield rough.

1PM: Leongatha and District has staged a middle-order fightback against South West in a MCW division two match at Kew Cricket Ground.

Leongatha and District was 6-153 off 46 overs, having slumped to 6-64 after 22 overs earlier in the day.

By contrast, Warrnambool and District has lost regular wickets during the middle of its innings against Mornington Peninsula (2) at Brighton Beach Oval in division two.

Warrnambool and District is 7-182 off 42 overs, having lost 5-44 in the past 10 overs. Dustin Drew has top scored with 55 while his opening partner Karl Turner made 48.

12PM: Warrnambool and District has reached 2-108 off 26 overs in its division two match against Mornington Peninsula (2) at Brighton Beach Oval.

Opener Dustin Drew is closing in on a half-century while Josh Stapleton has just joined him at the crease.

Karl Turner (48) and day-one hero Brett Eldridge (12) are the men out.

South West has reduced Leongatha and District to 6-85 off 32 overs to take command of its provincial grade match at Kew Cricket Ground.

11.30AM: South West has reduced Leongatha and District to 4-50 off 20 overs in its provincial grade match at Kew Cricket Ground.

Stand-in captain Todd Lamont has led the way with 2-5 while Clinton Baker (1-12) and Jake Reed (1-11) have also taken wickets. 

Warrnambool and District is 1-72 off 17 overs in its division two match against Mornington Peninsula (2) at Brighton Beach Oval.

Karl Turner is the man out for 48 off 60 balls.
