Police said they observed the green Holden Commodore travelling at speeds of 130 kilometres an hour in a 60 km/h zone on Ballarat Road about 5.30pm.
The 22-year-old is expected to be charged on summons with various traffic-related offences.
In a statement, police said the Hamilton man will receive a notice to surrender the vehicle at a later date.
“Police will be focused on the fatal five factors that contribute to road trauma during the Christmas and New Year period,” a police spokeswoman said.
“(Those factors include) speed, alcohol and drug-driving, fatigue, driver distraction and seatbelt offences.”
The Hamilton incident comes after a woman was caught driving erratically near Mortlake with her six-year-old daughter in the car on Christmas Day.
The woman’s car was intercepted five kilometres east of Mortlake on the Hamilton Highway after a member of the public reported erratic driving.
