His enthusiasm has helped transform a former Warrnambool dumping ground into a showpiece garden of native plants during the past decade.
For his efforts, he was presented on Saturday with the Don McTaggart award for excellence in environmental volunteering, recognising years of effort helping out at the Harris on Merri revegetation site, west of the former woollen mill site.
Mr Maurus, who moved to Australia from Bavaria in 1981, is project leader for the Warrnambool Coastcare/Landcare group and has been part of the transformation since the idea was initiated by Ann Park about 10 years ago.
“I’ve very honoured to receive the award. I’m just one of many who work together to make it happen,” he said.
“It’s become a lovely place with lots of birdlife and there is space nearby for recreation facilities to be installed.”
On Saturday volunteers installed name plaques identifying plant species.
