In the morning whale-watchers told The Standard two southern rights were seen off the Corkscrew in Portland Bay, as well as 200 metres offshore from Hanlon Parade.
Later a third whale joined the fun and came within 15 metres of the Lee Breakwater, according to photographer Bob McPherson.
“They came up pretty close to the breakwater and breached a few times,” he said.
“They’ve been there nearly all morning. One is a mother and had a sub-adult with her, and another big one turned up.
"There’s been a few in the past few weeks but these were southern right whales. This must be the start of them heading east towards Warrnambool.”
