A group of the biggest stars of the Geelong Football Club were in the south-west yesterday for a community visit.
Jimmy Bartel, Paul Chapman, Travis Varco, Corey Enright, Josh Hunt and local export Billie Smedts made a flying visit to the region, holding skills clinics, training sessions, role model talks and autograph signings at local primary and secondary schools.
The visit was also used to launch an innovative new program at Warrnambool Primary School which aims to encourage young people to be active and to improve physical activity levels of grade 5 and 6 pupils.
The program, called BioCats, was developed with The Victorian BioScience Education Centre and the Geelong Football Club.
The program uses role models including Geelong players, staff and BioLab staff to encourage teamwork, career aspirations, confidence, resilience and persistence.
It explores the latest trends in sport and pupils have the chance to experiment and explore the science and maths of football.
Pupils and teachers are provided with a toolkit of resources across the curriculum areas of science, maths and physical education to support the in-school program.
