The elderly council watchdog has ramped up his call for urgent action to replace the temporary ablution building installed in Gilles Street in 2011 when public toilets at the nearby former entertainment centre were closed for construction of the Lighthouse Theatre.
He hopes to flush out another answer soon from the city council which has delayed a decision while a consultant’s report is being prepared on public toilets across the municipality.
Recent damage by vandals of a door at the Gilles Street toilets prompted him to contact The Standard to reinforce his views the facility was becoming an eyesore.
“It’s filthy, dirty and an embarrassment for the city’s image, particularly considering it’s listed for tourists,” Mr Ryan said.
“That temporary facility was made for a building site, not to be stuck on a street forever.
“This is an issue that can be fixed now — we don’t need a consultant to tell us where to put in a permanent toilet block.
“It could be put at the old post office now owned by council, at the art gallery or TAFE — somewhere near the nightclubs.”
Community consultation for the public toilet strategy will be held this month with input from the Active Ageing Committee.
