Plenty of heart as ‘dumb bugger’ soldiers home at Warrnambool races

PROMISING Camperdown galloper Me Hungi may head to the spelling paddock for a short break following his impressive win in a $30,000 showcase race over 1700 metres at Warrnambool yesterday.

Veteran trainer Geoff Daffy revealed after the victory over The Wild Thing and Peace An Quiet that he might aim Me Hungi at a race at this year’s May Racing Carnival.

“He’s won four races in a row. Not many horses can do that,” Daffy said. “It was a tough run today.

“I reckon we might just give him a freshen up and see if there is a race at the Warrnambool May carnival for us.

“Each time we’ve lifted the bar he has not let us down. He showed today that he can handle wet ground. It was a real test for him today and we’re delighted how he ran.”

Daffy trained former top gallopers Rough Seas, Vena, Skipton Town and Gavel, but he refused to compare Me Hungi to any of his past leading horses.

“I find it tough to line up Me Hungi with the good horses which I’ve trained,” he said. “Let’s just say I have not had a horse come through his classes like this horse.

“I just think Me Hungi might develop into a superior 2000m horse when he comes back into work.

“I’ve been around horses all my life, so I try not to get carried away, but he is a promising horse.”

Jockey Craig Robertson, who rode the four-year-old at each of his six starts, said Me Hungi had developed from “a big, dumb bugger” to a horse with above-average ability.

“I was really impressed with his win today,” he said yesterday.

“He ran on heart from about the 900m mark. He kept digging deep. I was struggling on a few occasions but he refused to give it away.

“I’ve got a very good opinion of this horse. I reckon he will win a very good race one day.

“I’m glad they are thinking of giving him a break as I reckon he has done a great job at his six starts.”

Me Hungi earned $18,000 for his connections to take his prizemoney earnings to more than $59,000.
