It would have been daunting otherwise in a side where most players are selected from Victorian Netball League clubs.
The Bushfield 16-year-old made the cut for the national championships despite playing country league netball.
“I was really excited when I found out. I’m a bit nervous but I’m looking forward to it.”
Eliza will play in Victoria’s under 17 side for the championships, scheduled for April in Adelaide.
She acknowledged most players came from bigger VNL clubs.
“Most of the girls are from Melbourne. I’m hoping as we get more into training we will get to know each other a bit more. I’m sure we will. I’ve felt a little bit like an outsider.”
But with the ‘gift of the gab’ Eliza — a 188-centimetre goal shooter — was confident she would find her place in the side.
She was selected for the squad last September, when players from all Victorian regional netball academies were invited to try out.
Out of 50 girls, 25 made the cut. “I only found out I made the team this week. I couldn’t believe it,” Eliza said.
For the past year Eliza has played with North Warrnambool Eagles under 17 side in the Hampden league. She took up the sport when she was eight.
Before joining North Warrnambool Eagles, she played under 15s for Warrnambool and District league club Dennington.
The championships will be held from April 7 to 12.
