The Plovers were unable to defeat Melbourne in the season decider at Boroondara on Saturday, going down 7-6.
Warrnambool president Rhys Wilson said it was a hard-fought match, with two early penalties helping Melbourne to victory.
The Plovers had a last-minute penalty shot on goal.
“But it didn’t quite have the legs to make it over,” said Wilson, who was proud of the players despite the loss.
“I don’t think we left anything out there.
“That showed after the game, everybody was knackered.”
He believed the side exceeded expectations this season.
“If someone had asked at the start of the season if we would make the grand final, I probably would’ve said no,” he said.
“To fall at the last hurdle is always hard, no matter what sport or at what level.
“But we need to look at the positives from the season like finishing top of the table and we’ve done something for charity.”
Wilson, who highlighted coach Rowan Toki’s commitment this year, hoped as many players as possible would hang around for next season.
“I’m sure a couple of players will be going away to university and what have you but we always manage to pick up a couple,” he said.
The club has its presentation on Friday night.
