IMPROVED fitness is high on the list of team objectives for Luke Jackson and David Atkinson after their re-appointment as joint playing coaches of Deakin University.Club treasurer Brendan McKenzie confirmed the committee had backed Jackson and Atkinson for a second season.McKenzie said although the Sharks were limited to one win last season he believed they were more competitive week in, week out."We gave them the option last season of coaching and thought it was the fair and right thing to do to give them two or three years to gain experience and get the club somewhere," McKenzie said.Jackson said yesterday there was an understanding when he and Atkinson were appointed that it would be a two to three-year process."Even though wins on the board didn't reflect it we were pretty happy with last season," he said."We had 12 or 13 new players who played consistently in the seniors."I think the main thing is to get these blokes fit."They rock up for O Week in early March and you have a month to get them fit. It's pretty hard to try to play catch up in a month."Jackson said this year's student intake was the best for football ability in his 10 years with the Sharks, with the opportunity to top up from the 2009 influx. He identified ruckman Michael Havlin, defender Leigh Overall and forward Michael Dennis who would benefit from their first season with the Sharks, along with star goalkicker Dylan Chaplin-Burch.McKenzie is uncertain if the club will hold onballer Leigh Kellett, who travelled from Melbourne to play last season."We just want to stabilise and work with some of these players," he said."Four to six wins would be on our radar next year. "There's certainly a lot more positives. Juniors are only going to strengthen us as well."A season draw is expected to be released soon.
