TRAVELLING an hour along the Princes Highway each week has not hindered the performance of Colac and District Football Netball League Association players. The out-of-towners have raised eyebrows in the new Netball Victoria Regional State League competition.Colac faced the top two sides in their opening matches and only one goal separated each game. They lost to Warrnambool City in the first-round match before bouncing back the following week to upset Hampden Football Netball League.Coach Julie Monaghan said her team trailed by seven goals at the three-quarter time break but fought back to snatch a one-goal victory."We expected the competition to be really tough and we have faced what seems to be the top two sides already," she said."My girls had never really played together before but they have done really well."Monaghan said they had a young side which included four under 18 players. This week sharpshooter Emma McVilly from Simpson will make her debut in the competition.McVilly also plays State League competition in Melbourne each week with the Geelong Flyers alongside captain and centre Rachael Rodgers.Colac's 10-player squad will return to the Arc tonight with fresh legs after last week's bye to play Heywood which suffered a 34-goal loss to Hampden.
