THE cream of Corangamite's youth were recognised at an awards ceremony on Saturday night with more than 40 individuals and groups awarded for their contributions. The inaugural Corangamite Youth Achievement Awards highlighted excellence in various fields, from technology to environment and visual and performing arts.More than 200 people attended the awards at the Theatre Royal in Camperdown. The awards were organised by a group of school students from across the shire as part of the Our PlaYce program. They were opened by Corangamite Shire Mayor Ruth Gstrein. The group community service award was won by Cobden Technical School's VCAL class. The year 11 students were awarded for their contribution to community projects during the year, including their work on the Craters to Coast Rail Trail and weekly CFA volunteer training they completed.Cobden Technical School principal Peter Rock attended the awards. He said it was fantastic the students won and it was an honour to listen to the achievements of the other candidates."It's a wonderful recognition of the incredible young people we have in the shire," he said. The 26 Cobden Technical students are now qualified to fight fires if they choose to join a brigade, which eight students have already done. The individual community services award went to Ashley Bentley, of Timboon, for her efforts in the 40-Hour Famine. Instead of forgoing food, Ashley, 15, chose to go without technology, transport or electricity for 40 hours, walking 16 kilometres to school one day. She was nominated by Timboon P-12 teacher Susan Woodhouse for her fund-raising efforts and for always being available to help teachers with activities or events at the school. "I was a bit surprised (to be nominated) at first. I guess I didn't expect it or think I was eligible," Ashley said."I was so surprised I won. I thought everyone else was worthy (of winning) . "I do what I can to help out ." Triple J's Tom Ballard was the MC at the event and delighted the crowd with his quick wit, charm and sense of humour. Musicians Soul Traders ? Aaron Hayward, Hannah Duffus, Leigh Rosolin, Kerry O'Shea ? and dancers Taylor Rock, Ellie Merrett and Nicki Bettess performed. There was also a Welcome to Country performed by Lenny Clarke and the crowd was treated to a guest performance by musician Brett Clarke. Our PlaYce is supported by the Corangamite Shire, Cobden District Health Services and Timboon District Healthcare Services.
