Concerns over parking availability, customer access and floor-space constraints of the consolidated Koroit Street shop have been raised with the Liberal MP, who has called on Australia Post to clarify how services will be affected as part of the office transition.
An in-principle $1.3 million sale agreement between Australia Post and Warrnambool City Council was announced last month which would result in the Timor Street site being converted into local government offices.
Mr Tehan said inadequate community consultation from the post provider had resulted in confusion for many residents about the effect on the city’s mail delivery.
He has invited residents to contact his office if they have concerns about Warrnambool’s postal capacity under the new arrangement.
“We need a commitment from Australia Post that it will continue to provide services that meet the needs of Warrnambool’s expanding population,” Mr Tehan said.
“There’s been no real consultation with the community over how services will be changed under the new arrangements.
“A number of concerned residents have contacted me about whether the same level of parking will be made available, whether the same level of service will be provided at the one post shop and service to north Warrnambool’s expanding residential area.”
An Australia Post spokeswoman said the mail service was still working through the transition and sale but staff had been assured there would be no job losses from the move with all staff relocated.
“We have to go through a number of processes before the business centre closes, including working with the building owners of our Koroit Street post office to remodel the store to provide for additional customers,”
she said.
