The shire received 27 applications for the advertised chief executive officer (CEO) position from across Australia and overseas, with candidates from a range of local government, state government and private sector backgrounds.
Councillors decided earlier this year to advertise the position of current CEO Brett Stonestreet, whose contract expires on January 31.
Councillors took the unusual step of urging Mr Stonestreet to reapply for the position but said they were also interested to see other candidates before making a decision.
Now in the final stages of the selection process, councillors have been presented with a shortlist of candidates and are in the process of interviewing applicants.
Councillors appointed Philip Shanahan to assist in the recruitment process.
Mr Shanahan has more than 20 years' experience as a CEO in several municipalities and is now a consultant to the local government sector, having provided recruitment support for a number of CEO appointments, including the recent Glenelg Shire CEO .
The recruitment agent undertook first-round interviews and presented a shortlist of candidates to proceed to the second round of interviews with councillors.
Mayor James Purcell said the recruitment process was on track and it was most likely that the CEO appointment would be made before Christmas.
"Upon conclusion of second-round interviews it is anticipated that the preferred candidate will be selected and that due diligence processes and contract negotiation can occur, with an official appointment being confirmed in late December," he said.
"I would envisage that the successful applicant will be most likely to start early in the new year depending on their circumstances."
