Nathan McLeod, 21, died after the car he was driving veered off Bristows Road near his home about 3am Saturday.
His brother Bernard, 19, who was also in the car, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with spinal and head injuries.
Warrnambool's Val Eales said Bernard underwent surgery yesterday.
She said his spine was not damaged and he still had to overcome head injuries but he was expected to recover.
"They were on a quiet road and I think it was a case of boys and cars. Thank God no one else was involved.
"The car went through a fence and into the paddock," she said.
"Bernard will be all right, thank goodness.
"Nathan had started a traineeship with Colin McKenna (Midfield Meat), he was in the second month of that."
Mrs Eales said Nathan had been leaning toward become a stock agent.
"He was doing a bit of everything with Colin and was doing quite well.
''He loved the saleyards and worked with Jack Kelly for some time and blokes in Camperdown. Nathan liked the outdoors," she said.
"He was a quiet young man, a great worker and a helpful lad.
"He played cricket with Camperdown and also played football as well. He loved sport, especially cricket."
Mrs Eales said Nathan was also a volunteer in the Country Fire Authority and involved in other community activities.
"There's only the two boys in the family. Thank God one was saved.
''Nathan had been staying with us in Warrnambool five days a week since he started the traineeship," Mrs Eales said.
"He always came and stayed with us on Tuesdays when he was doing something with Jack Kelly.
''We'd serve him up a big feed being a real outdoors boy and he would be gone before dawn the next morning."
Bernard's father Chris and mother Sharon were by his side in hospital yesterday.
