A GIANT penguin will come to life this weekend following the success of a unique wildlife protection program on Warrnambool's Middle Island.

The fluffy mascot suit costing $7000 will be officially launched tomorrow morning at the annual Clean Up Australia Day activities on Warrnambool's foreshore only metres away from the island colony of little penguins saved from extinction by dedicated volunteers and Maremma guard dogs.
It has been purchased with a $2000 Warrnambool City Council grant and sponsorship by the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority with other organisations and local businesses to assist promoting the Middle Island project and other environmental events.
Warrnambool dance performer Barry Peters will bring the two-metre high mascot onto the national stage at Fun4Kids Festival in July with his 'They Call Me Maremma' song.
Peters said yesterday the mascot was yet to be named and he invited suggestions from children.
It will help with tomorrow's foreshore clean-up and be available to meet children at Viaduct Road from 11.3am to noon.
