More than a dozen singing and music groups have volunteered to keep the entertainment rolling with local compere Richard Ziegeler.
The natural ampitheatre by the eastern bank of the Merri in Payne reserve is usually filled with more than a 1000 people who bring their own deck chairs and rugs to soak up the festive atmosphere.
"We've got our fingers crossed for good weather," Dennington Community Association secretary David Kelson said.
"If it looks like being rained out we'll hold the event in the Brauer College auditorium.
"This is the biggest event of the year for Dennington and attracts about 1500 on a good night."
Entry is by donation for the Make A Wish Foundation.
Battery "candles" and fluorescent bracelets will be sold along with a selection of hot and cold foods and drinks from stalls manned by local schools and sports clubs.
The food court opens at 5.30am with the carols event starting at 6pm. Parking is available in a paddock opposite the reserve and along local streets.
