Chicago infant sleep researcher James McKenna is set to speak at an Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) seminar at Warrnambool’s Sebel Deep Blue.
The infant-mother bonding expert will discuss the concept of co-sleeping with a focus on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
He defines co-sleeping as the practice of babies sharing their parents’ bed or sleeping in a cot within arm’s reach.
Dr McKenna’s 2007 book Sleeping with Your Baby: A Parent’s Guide to Cosleeping encourages parents to employ sleeping methods that allow them to bond with their children.
His research shows that babies respond positively to the exchange of heat, sound, smell, touch and movement between them and their parents.
Dr McKenna found that places where cosleeping was common including Europe, Asia and Africa, reported SIDS cases less frequently than places where it was considered socially abnormal.
ABA Warrnambool counsellor Barb Glare said the “inspirational” speaker would offer insights into baby care that all parents would find valuable.
“Sleep is a hot topic at the moment, most mothers don’t get enough,” she said.
The Panmure mother of four said it was important to make a safe place in the bedroom where a mother and baby could be in contact with each other.
“Parenting is exhausting and the early days can be tough,” Ms Glare said.
“Babies have a 24-hour clock, they have no real idea of day and night early on. It’s easier when you understand their sleeping patterns.”
The seminar will act as a fund-raiser for ABA Warrnambool. Tickets can be purchased through Ms Glare on 0488 757 334 or on the website www.warrnamboolbreastfeeding.org.au
