** (MA15+)Director: Phil Claydon.Cast: Mathew Horne, James Corden, MyAnna Buring, Paul McGann.FROM the school of 'come up with the title first' film-making comes this wacky and uneven tribute to the classic Hammer Horror films of '50s-'70s.Lesbian Vampire Killers has a couple of good laughs and looks cool in a suitably B-grade kind of way, yet fails to live up to its name, which demands cult-favourite-in-waiting status.Horne and Corden are Jimmy and Fletch, two likeable losers who take off on a hiking trip after Jimmy has been dumped yet again by his bitch-of-a-girlfriend Judy (Lucy Gaskell). After choosing their destination via a dart throw, the pair end up in Cragwich, a cursed village plagued by fanged ladies of the night who have a penchant for other ladies. But as luck would have it, Jimmy and Fletch may be the only two people who can bring an end to this curse and kill the Vampire Queen. It's all as stupid as it seems, while that's the aim of the whole thing, Lesbian Vampire Killers is neither funny enough or clever enough to be the Hammer homage it could have been.Although, to be fair, many of the 'so-called' Hammer classics were as stodgily B-grade as this - and even worse - so in one sense Lesbian Vampire Killers hits the mark with its solid yet inexpensive production values. While it riffs on Hammer's raunchier films such as The Vampire Lovers, this spoof owes more to zombie film parody Shaun Of The Dead, hoping to skewer the blood-sucking genre just like Pegg and Wright did in their zom-rom-com.But writers Paul Hupfield and Stewart Williams miss staking the heart of their subject by a long way. The majority of gags come from the gutter, including penis-handled swords, a bevy of boob jokes, a swearing vicar (played by one-time Doctor Who McGann), whereas Shaun Of The Dead won us over with deadpan wit, comedic violence, and even a hint of satire.Lesbian Vampire Killers will no doubt win a following, not only because of its fanboy-wet-dream title and seeing as how many of the female actors appear to have been hired for their cup size rather than their ability as thespians, but also because the film does have a certain dumb charm amid its messy plot and low ambitions.
