* 4536 young people aged 10-17 were under youth justice supervision on an average day in 2021-22.

* 8982 young people were supervised at some time during the year.

* Just over four in five (82 per cent) of young people under supervision on an average day were supervised in the community and about 1 in 5 (18 per cent) were in detention.

* Just over three in four (76 per cent) of young people in detention on an average day were unsentenced (awaiting the outcome of their legal matter or sentencing).

* In 2021-22, the rate of young people aged 10-17 under supervision on an average day ranged from 5.8 per 10,000 in Victoria to 46 per 10,000 in the Northern Territory.

* Indigenous young people are under youth justice supervision at much higher rates than non-Indigenous young people.

* Between 2017-18 and 2021-22, the rate of Indigenous young people aged 10-17 under supervision on an average day fell from 162 to 121 per 10,000. The rate of non-Indigenous young people under supervision also fell over the period, from 9.6 to 6.5 per 10,000.

* The rate of Indigenous young people under community-based supervision declined from 130 per 10,000 in 2017-18 to 94 per 10,000 in 2021-22, while non-Indigenous rates fell from 8.2 to 5.4 per 10,000.

* The rate for Indigenous young people in detention declined from 33 to 28 per 10,000 over the five-year period, while the non-Indigenous rates declined from 1.5 to 1.2 per 10,000.
