A learner driver in an unregistered car has been caught driving at 253km/h, in one of the highest speeds ever captured on South Australian roads.
Just after 6.30pm on January 30, highway patrol officers were conducting speed checks on the North South Motorway, in Waterloo Corner in Adelaide's north.
"They clocked a black 2009 Holden utility travelling north at 253km/h in a 110km/h zone," officers said.
"A short distance later the Holden ute suffered mechanical failure, and police were able to catch up to the car to speak to the driver."

Checks revealed the 20-year-old male driver held a learner's permit, and his passenger was not a full licence holder.
The driver returned a positive reading to a drug test.
By a V8 Supercar can reach speeds up to 300km/h, with drivers reaching around 250km/h hour up Mountain Strait, just before Griffins Bend, during the Bathurst 1000 race, Fox Sports report.

South Australia Police have reported the learner driver for aggravated extreme speed, driving at a manner dangerous, breach of learners permit, and driving an unregistered motor vehicle and will appear in court at a later date.
The man will be issued with a court summons to face the charges.
He lost his licence on the spot for 12 months and his vehicle was impounded for 28 days.
