And it's really hard to understand why they've done that.
The world keeps moving faster and faster, which makes the 14-year gap for Australian Idol problematic.
The basic premise of the show is that it gives undiscovered talent the chance to shine and become famous.
That was something that had wings back in the first decade of the 2000s, but it's hard to see how it's relevant any more.
Since then, the low-cost of home recording equipment, the access to social media and the popularity of music streaming have seriously lowered the barrier to entry in the music business.
Singers can now record and promote themselves, sending their music to ears around the world without any help from a record company.
The idea of winning a record deal - which is the big prize in Australian Idol - just doesn't have the appeal it once did.
Also against the Idol reboot chances of success is the splintering in TV viewership. Fourteen years ago, the five free-to-air channels still had a degree of dominance.
Tonnes of people still tuned in, which worked in Australian Idol's favour, making it event TV.
But now, people's eyeballs are here there and everywhere - they're over on pay TV, they're streaming Netflix or Stan, they're watching hours of TikTok videos.
There are heaps of other options these days. which leaves one to wonder just how many people will be tuning in and voting for their favourite singers.
My guess is that number will be way, way lower than in previous seasons.
WILDLIFE ER
7.35pm, Wednesday, SBS
Reality TV documentaries - where cameras follow people around and just film what happens - are hugely popular these days.
But obviously, you knew that already.
They're popular because they're cheap; you don't need to write scripts, hire actors or build sets. All the raw material comes already made for you.
But cheap doesn't necessarily mean good; some reality docos are pretty shoddy.
Fortunately Wildlife ER isn't one of them.
It's an enjoyable and informative series that follows the work of the RSPCA, which treats up to a hundred wild animals every day.
In the first episode, a mum koala and her joey tug at the heartstrings as vets try and work out why they're so sick.
Also, there's the problem of an owl flying around inside a warehouse. To capture it, the crew need to bring nets fired from a pneumatic tube - which becomes a pain when they miss and have to repack the contraption.
HARD QUIZ
8pm, Wednesday, ABC
One of the appeals of Hard Quiz is really, really, really niche subjects that wouldn't feature on other game shows get some serious attention.
This episode is a case in point; contestant Mikey has chosen antique purses as his expert topic.
Seems Mikey is a very big fan of old purses.
