Angel McKay lives in Eungella, a small community of 190 people located west of Mackay, and her home was cut off by floodwaters and had no phone reception.

Local volunteer firefighter Ian Smith came to her rescue and helped get her to safety so she could give birth.

"I thought you can't have a baby in this place, the rivers are covered up. I need to get her into the township where we have phone service," he said.

Mr Smith then rang a doctor and a nurse and organised them to meet him and Angel at his place.

Then, Mr Smith and his wife turned their living room into a makeshift birthing suite and the medical staff took over.

"It all went good, they're all well. She's had a bit of a restless night I heard, but that's to be expected hey," he said.
