Spectacular fireworks displays in Australia date back as far as 1867 when they were used to celebrate a visit to Melbourne by Alfred the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria's son, who was the first royal to visit Australia.
Originating in China, fireworks were believed to ward off evil spirits before being adopted more widely and used for celebrations.
The traditional New Year's Eve song in the English speaking world is Auld Lang Syne. Based on a Scottish folk song with words written by Robert Burns in 1788, it is sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year's Eve. It translates roughly to "times long past" or "days gone by".
Here's where to catch your local fireworks display on Saturday December 31st:

The annual fireworks show began in 1976 and has become one of the biggest New Year's Eve celebrations on the planet, enjoyed by over 425 million people across the globe according to the official Sydney NYE website.
