Almost 20 students began classes for the first time at Warrnambool Stadium yesterday.
The six-week program, aimed at girls and boys aged five to 17, will lead up to a performance at the Warrnambool Gymnastics Centre’s annual display day on December 10.
Gymnastics co-ordinator Pam Davis said the program would continue next year and participants could go on to compete in cheerleading carnivals.
“Cheerleading is a very exciting sport and participants learn lots of different moves and routines while improving their fitness and having fun,” Mrs Davis said.
“This is the first time we have trialled cheerleading but we expect it will be very popular.
“It’s another gym sport and something we thought teenagers who aren’t in traditional sports might find quite appealing.
“They have a bit of fun but they’re also learning moves, exercising and socialising, so it’s threefold.”
Mrs Davis said cheerleading was a more challenging dance exercise than aerobics and zumba.
“It’s a lot more choreographed than other dancing exercises.
“It takes a while to learn the moves and how to do them properly and safely.
“We’re going to work towards a routine at our annual gymnastics display day and we’ll take it from there.”
Gymnastics coaches will take the classes from 4pm to 5pm each Friday until December 16.
Mrs Davis said people could call her on 5562 5114 or 0417 104 708 for more information or to book a place.
